Beach Trip! Georgia's Beautiful Sapelo Island

No location was chosen

Sapelo Island is the most beautiful and isolated of Georgia's barrier islands. Join us for a great beach weekend full of sand, surf, wildlife, and fun!

OCS will have EXCLUSIVE use of the Cabretta Campground located just 100 feet from the beach!

We'll explore Sapelo's natural community, from the forested uplands, to the vast salt marsh, and the complex beach and dunes systems. You can lounge around on the beach all weekend or hike, swim, and kayak with us!

When I was there 3 years ago on these same dates we were lucky enough to witness the sea turtles hatching. A UGA marine biologist was on hand and she asked for our help digging and getting some of the lost turtles pointed in the right direction!

What will we do?

There are many miles of trails to explore the marshes, dunes, and beaches! My favorite walk is along the beach where entire driftwood TREES wash up on shore. It's a beautiful sight!

If anyone is up for it we can sea kayak around Blackbeard Island! The beautiful waters around Sapelo and Blackbeard are great even for the beginner. Our guides will meet us on Sapelo with all the gear we need. There is an additional charge for kayaking.

And we can always hang out at the "bar" which is really just this guys porch. Yes there are 26 families remaining in Hog Hammock community. They are all descendants of the original Geechee population which have maintained many aspects of their original African cultures.

Sapelo is truly a beautiful place to explore! Spots are limited and we will cross post this to all OCS chapters so RSVP soon! There are already 12 from Atlanta signed up so join us for a fun weekend.

Your cost of $60 includes the following:

1. Ferry transportation to the island and return trip.
2. Two nights of camping at Cabretta Campground just steps from the beach.
3. All permits and fees for visting the island.
4. I will provide complimentary water, sodas, and beer all weekend!

Please note that the sea kayaking option is an additional charge and will be posted as a separate event. It should run $85 but I don't have the details finalized just yet.

Transportation to the Sapelo Visitor Center is not included. I'd encourage you to carpool! It's just over a 5 hour drive from Greenville.

Meals are also not included. Please see notes below about what to bring for camping.

Important Notes About Camping at Cabretta

Think of this as a car camping trip but we still have to keep things portable and light. It is recommended you pack your things in a single backpack. You can attach some things onto the pack as well. You may also bring one additional container (like a rubbermaid box) OR a cooler. You should have NO loose objects on the ferry.

The important thing is that you should be able to carry everything on your own and quickly load the ferry. If you have any questions please email me.

At Cabretta you will need a tent or hammock, sleeping bags, etc. There are HOT showers and full restrooms at the site.

There is no garbage collection at the site so you will need to pack your own garbage out also.

I will be bringing a camp stove and fuel for cooking and a small canopy tent. We'll coordinate on meals before hand. If we agree to some group meals I may ask for some additional cash to cover the cost of food.

This was the most amazing trip ever! We went to a land of National Geographic; basically untouched and uncommercialized. We had a great group too.
