Lake Jocassee Boat Ride and Hike

Walmart (map)

Selected By: Tyler Hudgins

Please join us for an awesome day on Lake Jocassee!

First, a nice boat ride from Brooks at Lake Jocassee Boat Tours to the top of the lake, up the Toxaway River to the Canebrake Access to the Foothills Trail, where you will begin an approximately 6 mile hike to the Laurel Fork Falls Access. This is the most popular day hike, and it takes you over the suspension bridge that traverses the Toxaway River, up ‘heartbreak ridge’ to the best views of Lake Jocassee , and on to Laurel Fork Creek at the lake’s edge. We’ll take a short, 15 minute spur to hike to the overlook at the top of Laurel Fork Falls before embarking on the boat. The hike itself should take about 4 hours.

Then a leisurely tour of the lake as we wander back to the dock. We’ll likely see some bald eagles along the way, and plenty of loons, Lake Jocassee’s famous winter residents. In search of eagles and other wild fowl, we’ll travel up the Horsepasture River, visit Mill Creek Falls, and perhaps ‘wet hike ‘ to the base of Laurel Fork Falls. The lake has been too low of late to boat in, but it’s great fun to walk in if conditions permit. The waterfalls on the lake are at their most powerful this time of year. We’ll take an hour or two meandering back to the dock from Laurel Falls, so expect a 6 to 7 hour day on the lake.

Bring your favorite food and beverages ( adult beverages are just fine) to enjoy while riding/touring your way back to the dock.

The cost is 45 dollars per person.

We can carpool from Greenville to the lake.

Tyler, I am from the Atlanta OCS and this looks like a ton of fun and where can I meet the rest of the group since Greenville would be out of the way? I typically get to this area going up SC State HWY 11...

As you travel up Jocassee Lake Road, look for the large brown Devils Fork State Park sign on the right. Take the next left , at the sign with an arrow indicating the location of the picnic area. After turning left, take an immediate right, into the picnic area. Go through the pay booth, pay 2 dollars per person, and drive down to the end of the parking lot. I'll meet you there.

Thanks so much, but I'm all the way in Duncan SC... which is 40 minutes from G-ville Walmart. my friend is putting in my new battery (yaaaay). He should be done in about 10 minutes, I could leave in 15 minutes, but I'd be 1/2 hr late to the dock and don't want to hold up the boat for this. That's kinda wrong.

I wouldn't get there until at least 10:45am. GPS says 66.7 miles from Salem point (1 hr/45 min)... so can't make 10:30 unless I speed down the highway 20 miles over the limit... I'm not above that, but my luck today-I'll get pulled over. Thanks so much for trying to accommodate, but I don't want to be That Girl and make everyone wait. I don't expect a refund so if someone wants to bring a friend and take my spot, go ahead... compliments of me.

Good golly Miss Molly, I had a great time. The hike ended up being 6 miles, and surprisingly it ended up being no problem. (just watch out for those slippery puddles! that catching myself before my head hit anything was a MAJOR improvement over a couple of years ago) Met lots of friendly folks, and got to revisit a gorgeous nature reserve I'd forgotten about; -=apparently=- I've been sailing on Lake Jocassee several times before. Huh, yeah OK. This day restored my faith that us humans are NOT overrunning the planet...
